PSG Overcomes Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.

However, the southern French side struck two times late to take a shock advantage. First, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital leveler in the final moments to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the past thirteen seasons.
