The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.
